Argentine Gangs: From Scams to Murders

In 2025, crimes by gangs in Argentina have surged, with 20,000 scams and 30 murders daily. Criminals use social media and fake court notifications to defraud citizens, especially during the holiday season.

Argentine Gangs: From Scams to Murders

Criminal gangs have gained access to judicial data from Buenos Aires (criminal and contraventional), allowing them to send emails to individuals with pending cases for threats or injuries. According to lawyer Miglino, this affects around 40 million people across Argentina, providing criminals with a vast pool of potential scam victims. While judges and prosecutors, especially at the National Criminal Instruction Court, work diligently, this has not prevented gangs composed of Colombians, Venezuelans, Senegalese, and Argentines from operating. A recent example is the murder of 29-year-old Airport Security Police (PSA) officer Lucas Flores during a robbery in José León Suárez. He was accompanying his brother to buy a vehicle found on Facebook Marketplace. During the ambush, the criminals also robbed the victim's brother, who miraculously survived unharmed. He is one of 12 fatal victims in the bloody year of 2025. In Lomas de Zamora, scammers sell designer clothing and brand-name sneakers, using photos of authentic products but offering them at 30-40% lower prices. They also target the elderly, offering to exchange currency. Furthermore, the gangs are sending fake emails from the Federal Institute of Justice, prompting recipients to reply to a 'judicial notification' to steal their information. Miglino emphasized that it is easier to prevent fraud than to recover stolen money and urged vigilance, especially with the approach of Christmas and New Year.
